Sue’s love of fishing started at a young age when growing up on a farm in Tapora, North of Auckland. When farm chores were completed, family fishing trips to Manukapua Island in the Kaipara Harbour were always a great time. Back then, a hand line was the way she caught Snapper or kahawahi, or anything else that came along.
Now living in Matarangi in the Coromandel, where she runs a business with her husband and enjoys getting out on their Stabicraft as often as they can. In the last year she has gone from a committee member for the Matarangi Boat and Fishing Club Inc to now being the President of the Club and of last year become the Club Delegate to the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council. At the end of 2024 became the Zone 3 Representative to the Board.
Sue’s passionate about sustainable fishing practices and ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same experiences she had growing up. Her involvement with the council also allows her to connect with like-minded people, collaborate on projects that benefit the sport, and advocate for the interests of local communities who rely on fishing for both recreation and livelihood.
In addition to her work with the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council, Sue’s leadership role in the Matarangi Boat and Fishing Club Inc has allowed her to mentor younger members, sharing her knowledge and fostering a love for the ocean and its ecosystems. With her background in both farming and fishing, Sue brings a well-rounded perspective to her roles, ensuring that both the traditions of fishing and the future of the sport are carefully nurtured.
Through her work with youth fishers and her commitment to sustainable practices, Sue’s impact on the fishing community is far-reaching, helping to preserve New Zealand’s rich maritime heritage for generations to come.
