Snapper Rig John dory 2 review 2024
DECISION: INCREASE APPROVED
Introduction
On 27 June 2024 Fisheries New Zealand (FNZ) advised they were reviewing the Total Allowable Catches (TACs), allowances and the Total Allowable Commercial Catches (TACCs) for snapper, rig and John dory in Fisheries Management Area 2, the lower southeast coast of the North Island.
These proposals were part of a package of 20 reviews seeking public feedback within 21 working days.
The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council (NZSFC) and other organisations strongly objected to the unreasonable timeframe available to make submissions. With no response, the joint parties collaborated to develop a comprehensive submission by the 29 July deadline.
Decision
Shane Jones, the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, has approved a 94 tonne TACC increase for Snapper 2, a 40 tonne TACC increase for Rig 2 (SPO 2), and a 134.5 tonne decrease for John dory 2. All changes apply from 1 October 2024.
Proposal
Table 1: Current and FNZ’s proposed TAC, TACC and allowances, in tonnes, for Snapper 2 (SNA 2), Rig 2 (SPO 2), and John dory 2 (JDO 2).
Submission
Prior to developing a submission the NZSFC, LegaSea, NZ Angling & Casting, and NZ Underwater collaborated to develop a Preliminary View of the FNZ proposals. This was an attempt to help the public understand the FNZ proposals, and what it all means. Separate Preliminary Views were developed for each of the fish stocks under review. (see below)
On 29 July a joint submission from all 4 organisations was sent to FNZ. The submission combined comments on all 3 fish stocks because they are inter-related, caught in the trawl fisheries together with many other species. Issues affecting one species often impacts on many others, particularly in the trawl fisheries.
