Kina 1 TAC review 2023
DECISION: APPROVED
Introduction
Commercial catch limits for kina in East Northland (SUR 1A), the Hauraki Gulf and Bay of Plenty (SUR 1B) have been the same since 2003. The limits have been regularly exceeded since then.
On 7 June 2023 Fisheries New Zealand (FNZ) proposed to increase the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and Total Allowable Commercial Catch (TACC) in these two management areas. While we do not normally support increases on the basis of catches in excess of the TACC, the science supports modest a increase in both areas. Submissions were due by 17 July 2023.
In July our joint submission outlined why we supported a modest increase to the TAC and TACC for kina in East Northland (SUR 1), Hauraki Gulf and Bay of Plenty (SUR 2).
Rachel Brooking’s Ministerial decision to support a TACC increase in SUR 1A & 1B was released on 21 September 2023.
Submission
In June and July 2023 the NZSFC collaborated with LegaSea and the New Zealand Angling & Casting Association to submit in support of the proposed TACC increases and the proposed increase to the allowance set aside to provide for Māori customary fishing.
Support for the increases was based on the knowledge that kina abundance is high in many areas, and that prolific numbers of kina in some areas is impacting on the wider ecosystem, creating kina barrens in some locations.
