Briefings to Ministers
Introduction
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) provides their Ministers with briefing papers to give them an overview of the Minister’s role, the agency’s role and the sector for which they are responsible.
In terms of fisheries, MPI advises on their role and that of Fisheries New Zealand (FNZ), the fisheries and aquaculture sector and how they are currently managed, and challenges to the industry.
There is usually brief mention of non-commercial fishing interests and how that fits into overall management.
Varied advice
Advocates for various interest groups, commercial and non-commercial also provide the Minister with their perspectives on the role of the Minister and FNZ. Some briefing papers are detailed, others are succinct.
It is unclear how much attention is paid to these briefing papers from advocates by the Minister or FNZ. However, it is a useful way to express concerns and share the sectors’ view on current and future management.
Below is a snapshot of briefing papers available online. As more become available, they will be uploaded.
