Maunganui Bay temporary closure
DECISION: APPROVED
Introduction
A temporary closure to the harvest of all fish, marine life and seaweed, except kina, has been applied to Maunganui Bay since 2010. Each temporary closure is for a 2-year period and is requested under section 186A of the Fisheries Act (1996).
Ngati Kuta and Patukeha ki Te Rawhiti make the applications as mana whenua of Maunganui Bay, including Deep Water Cove, in the southern waters of the Bay of Islands.
The s186A application is made to the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries who reviews it and approves or amends the application.
On 7th October 2022, we received advice that the Minister approved the application. The temporary closure commences on 14th October 2022, and will expire in October 2024.
