Fishing has gone a bit quiet, is it the weather, the month, or have we had enough? I don’t think so judging by the catches below. Split Enz sing “six months in a leaky boat”, if it is still leaky you have been fishing too much, and it’s time to fix it ready for the winter fishing.
05/05 in the mail for Scott Tindale was his Official IGFA Shark Grand Slam award for three species of shark in one day. Scott caught a Mako, a Blue, and a Hammerhead Shark for this award, two were tagged & one was a pending world record thirty to one on fly and donated to science. These were caught on 25/02/2016, well done Team Tindale and angler Scott. In Scotts words “I got a little wet today”. On the bright side he is claiming a new world record for his Mako Shark, weighing 91.2kg caught on 1kg line, this may explain the getting a bit wet.
Fishing out of the Bay of Islands; 28/04 the Scott family on Odyssea had a magic day, firstly tagging a Striped Marlin. Secondly a pending New Zealand line class Small fry record for Hunter with a 133.4kg Striped Marlin. And thirdly not to be outdone a 28.8kg Yellow Fin Tuna for sister Lola, another pending small fry line class New Zealand record claim. What a big three for this team!
From the Maraetai Beach Boating club; – 18/04/2016, what is believed to be a club first, a billfish was weighed at the club. Off the boat “Ruckus”, angler Aaron McIntyre went out and came back with his 87.8kg Broadbill Swordfish. From Whangaroa; the “Kuri” with Brian on the helm and Anne as the angler, went out for a quick not so quiet family trip with a tagged and released Blue Marlin estimated at 250kg on 24 kg line. Not finished yet, they went on to land a Broadbill swordfish weighing in at 102.3kg.
From Houhora; on the 29/04 the vessel “Notorious” weighed in a Big Eye Tuna for angler Tim Wilkinson, weighing in at 98.6kg on 37kg line caught at the King Bank.
Also from Houhora, club Patron Guy Jacobsen fishing on the “Hook n Bull” came in from a day’s deep dropping baits for Broadbill with not one, not two, but three, with each one getting closer to the 15kg line class record he is trying to achieve. A month later Guy and the “Hook n Bull” team came in to weigh his latest attempt for the record, this one weighing in at 157.0kg, getting closer all the time.
Another one from Houhora the trailer boat “Wee Weta” with Cameron Findlayson as angler came in to weigh his Broadbill swordfish with this one weighing in at 237.8kg caught on 37 kg line. What is more astonishing is he caught this on a solo fishing trip.
From the Far North West, Ahipara; Mike Fryer headed out on the “Three Bears” on 30/04 and is now leading the club for heaviest Striped Marlin, his weighing in at 153.0kg. Also from Ahipara, but this time fishing in the Houhora ladies’ competition, Hannah Shalders caught the winning Snapper weighing in at 10.09kg.
Special mention here goes out to one of our own leading recreational fisheries exponents, Trish Rae who went out fishing for a change and caught her a very nice Striped Marlin weighing in at 101.2kg. This fish is a just reward for all the hard efforts Trish puts in on our behalf.
Reported from Mangawhai angler Luke Cline fishing from the trailer boat “Trump” whilst targeting snapper down off Te Arai landed a very nice Kingfish weighing 32.48kg caught on
From the back of Great Barrier Island Richard Hart reported a great couple of days, although no Marlin was seen, they did see some Mahimahi and managed a respectable Broadbill Swordfish weighing in at 245kg after a ten-hour fight. Tauranga reports a good start to their Team Theo Broadbill Challenge, winning Broadbill so far goes to Charlie Champness, weighing in at 104.7kg caught from the “King Hit.”
Weighed in at Tutukaka from the boat “Grouse” Nathan Adams weighs in a Broadbill at 266.4kg, an old fashioned 586 pounds, and there was another lying on the wharf just under 200kg.
