Current Lines June 2016

With the cold, the great rugby being played at present, it is hard to believe that there are still those going out chasing the big gladiators of the deep.  NZ sword fishing is currently in full swing weather permitting! The radio is on Radio Sport, State of Origin 2 has kicked off, go the Blues!

I would like to promote the report Blue Water Marine Research did on the tagging programme.  To date, there has been much discussion on tagging and why and how we should do it.   Here is a report from Blue Water Marine research, this is well worth the read on a good day let alone a rainy one. //www.nzsportfishing.co.nz/userfiles/file/Gamefish-tagging-report-Apr16.pdf

Recent winter warm fuzzy’s for the following anglers whom went out and braved the cold;

15/06– Donna Pascoe and the “Gladiator” went out the back of Gt Barrier Island looking for their name sake, and came back with a fin Broadbill for Donna weighing 211.6kg.  One could add mission accomplished.

17/06 – Tauranga vessel “Fixation” with Luke Dolman as angler, went up out of Tutukaka and caught a Broadbill, just kilos short off the clubs best for the season.  Luke’s weighed in at 234.8 kg.

18/06 –  Guy Jacobsen and the “Hook n Bull” team were out again looking for the men’s 15kg line class Broadbill record.  Guy missed just by a few kilos when he weighed in a 165.2 kg  Broadbill on 15kg.  The Current NZ record was caught in 2000 weighing 172.4k for angler J Griffiths.  The current world record is 177.81kg.

18/06 –  for the Whakatane Sportfishing Club and the world famous waters around White Island, angler Dennis Marsh caught his Broadbill that weighed 107kg.

20/06 –  Local Ahipara identity and weighmaster Ginty Morrogh got to cross his Broadbill off his bucket list, with his first Broadbill weighing in at 100.5kg

There is likely to be more that I have been missed for this report, like one group who went out and caught 6 over the weekend.  Western Break posted a video on Facebook showing the perils of being careful when releasing a smaller one recently!

Another must read is the report “Economy of Recreational Fishing report” from the New Zealand Marine Research Foundation, aptly listed on the Sport Fishing Council web site; Recreational fishing is a billion-dollar industry. March 2016.

A special report from the BOISC Club

BAY OF ISLANDS SWORDFISH CLUB – MEDINOVA 47th ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL YELLOWTAIL TOURNAMENT

Welcome back to the 47th Annual International Yellowtail Tournament for 2016.  A very special event, not only because it is the Yellowtail Tournament, but this is Titch’s 40th Tournament of not only competing in the Tournament, but also being the driving force behind getting the Aussie contingent to Russell every year. Without his enthusiasm, dedication and drive in organising the very large contingent of Aussie anglers to come across every year, this tournament would not be what it is today.  For that the Club and Russell business community sincerely thanks you!

This year we had 25 Teams (6 junior) made up of 66 senior anglers and 22 junior anglers.  Catch of the day for Day One had to be Australian Junior, Chloe Hammersley’s Yellowtail Kingfish which weighed in at 20.95kg. Senior Angler most points was Rowan White fishing on the vessel DIESEL representing the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club with 3620.9797 points.   Junior Angler most points Chloe Hammersley representing GFAA (Game Fishing Association Australia) fishing on FOREIGN EXCHANGE scoring 2372.971 points. Team most points went to Diesel with 7264.84595 points.  Congratulations to all of those who caught fish throughout the Tournament, almost every team saw some action.  A total of 170 fish were recorded for the tournament. In comparison to last year where we had slightly more anglers, this year more fish per angler were recorded.
