Umupuia temporary closure 2008-2024
DECISION: APPROVED
Introduction
A temporary closure to the harvest of cockles has applied to Umupuia Beach Manukau since 2008, in an effort to manage the over harvesting of cockles in the area. The temporary closure is for a 2-year period and is requested under section 186A of the Fisheries Act (1996).
Ngai Tai Umupuia Te Waka Totara Trust has made the closure applications for Umupuia Beach every two years as each section 186A notice is due to expire.
The application is made to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries who then reviews the application and approves or amends the application.
Update
The last approval was due to expire on 18 December 2024. In April 2024 Fisheries New Zealand (FNZ) advised another application had been made for a further closure. The NZSFC jointly submitted in support of the application. On 5 August FNZ advised the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, Shane Jones, had approved the 2-year temporary closure, effective 7 August 2024.
Submission
Recent submissions in support of a temporary closure were made in 2024 and 2022. In 2020 the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council did not submit in response to the temporary closure request, due to other commitments. In previous years the Council has submitted in support of temporary closure of Umupuia Beach under section 186A of the Fisheries Act.
