From Houhora – Profile 1, owned & skippered by Peter Mold had a practice run for the Houhora One Base today with his grandson and son Tim. No disappointment here, with Tim coming home with a 162.8 kg blue marlin. The blue was quite a handful from the start eventually dying and heading for the bottom. Great team work had the fish to the boat just after 3 1/2 hours. It’s been a great start weather & fish wise for day 1 of the Nationals. Junior angler Jamiro Wells landed his very first marlin today fishing in the Nationals for Houhora on that very lucky boat “Mike’s Stabi” skippered by Mike Allan and coached by Dad (Rob Wells). Mike has been out three times this season and each time landed a member of his crew a striped marlin. Jamiro’s fish weighed 105.4 kg and is also the 1st marlin for a junior angler at Houhora. Redeye’ owner & club member Graham Price was fishing with Warkworth club member John Greensmith in Parengarenga Harbour today and picked up four big trevally and some snapper. Grahams best was 5.64 kg and he now leads the clubs trevally section and Johns was 5.22 kg.
5th and final day of Whangaroa One Base and we got some blues on the weigh-station, heaviest was for Roy Bergquist on Albacora with a fish of 183.3kg. Close 2nd was Jason Wech on Centrefold with a blue of 175.4kg. Tuna / Kingfish section was won by KC. Shark section by Santana and the billfish section by Albacora. David Adams who bought the boat Marcus II got the Calcutta money. Who won the Waiataiti Trophy? Waikato of course, along with the Queensland 10’s..
Black Label managed to snag the first marlin for 2017 off Taranaki west coast. Weight 134kg caught by local Hayden with skipper Duane on board on Feb 11.
Whangarei Deep Sea Anglers Club – Certainly was a different kinda’ Nautigals – Great weather, very few fish, and a major power cut!!! This year’s Air Vanuatu Nautigals tournament was certainly one to be remembered by the 70 teams who joined us for the Saturday and Sunday of Waitangi weekend. With an overall tally of just 1 Blue Marlin, 1 Stripey , 1 Shortbill Spearfish (a pending Club record on 24kg!), 1 Mahimahi and 1 Yellowtail, there were a great many lucky draws to be won. Tauranga’s beast, the launch Kyrenia with angler Karl Boille came in on Waitangi Day with his 336.1kg blue marlin caught NE of Mayor we were told.
Kawhia fished well for their recent Onebase with 4 marlin weighed and 3 t/r. Further north the Counties Locals fished their beloved west coast from the Manukau and have had great success, with multiple hook-ups and losses. Leading up to the Raglan Onebase, weather permitting a few more will be caught.
